We see adoptees of all ages to help them process and navigate the challenges of adoption. No client is the same. Much of this work is intuitive on the behalf of the clinician, knowing when to do the right intervention at the right time.
For younger children, we typically see them in office and do Theraplay with them and their adoptive families. We usually begin by restoring the child's sense of "safe base" and giving them a voice. Education is provided to the family regarding co-regulation and self-regulation to help manage big emotions. We also provide support and education to the adoptive parents in separate sessions to help manage their feelings about whatever is going on. This approach goes a long way towards helping the whole family communicate better and improve relationships.
For tweens and teens, Theraplay may still be a technique that is utilized but we might also add in Lifebook work and education specifically on the 7 Core Issues in Adoption depending on the emotional age of the child. Support and education for the adoptive parents in separate sessions is also a part of the process.
For adult adoptees, we decide together what their needs are and where they want to focus. Sometimes the focus is on relationships with others, sometimes it's on reunion with birth family. Either way, our team is equipped to manage the needs of adoptees. We intentionally specialize in this work. When an adoptee of any age has a challenge, we are ready to come alongside them and help them through it.
